FAQ
Getting Started
What should I wear or bring to my first class?
Please wear athletic shoes (no boots, sandals, Crocs, dress shoes, or open-toe shoes) and a comfortable T-shirt. (A spare is recommended, you’re going to get sweaty!) Bring long pants for fencing with a metal sword—sweatpants work best; tights/leggings are acceptable but not ideal. Shorts are fine for warm-ups and non-weapon drills. We recommend bringing a water bottle. Be sure to fill out our online registration form (you do not need to bring a printed copy) and USA Fencing Free Trial form (select “Forte Fencing Club”). All fencing equipment is provided for your first month of classes.
Why do I need to register with USA Fencing?
This allows a new fencer to try fencing at a USA Fencing Member Club for 3 months with full insurance coverage through the USA Fencing policy. It also connects you to the national organization that supports fencing in the United States and is required for participation in organized fencing activities. Membership helps provide shared standards, resources, and support for clubs and programs nationwide.
Is fencing safe for children and adults?
Yes. Fencing is a non-contact sport that emphasizes control, technique, and sportsmanship. All participants wear protective equipment, use age-appropriate weapons, and follow established safety rules at all times. Our classes are supervised by trained instructors who prioritize proper instruction, warm-ups, and safe conduct to minimize the risk of injury.
Do I need to purchase fencing equipment?
All fencing equipment is provided for your first month of classes. After that, students will begin acquiring their own basic equipment, but this does not need to happen all at once. We’re happy to help you prioritize items and add equipment gradually in a way that fits your budget. (All equipment can be purchased through our Armory, please contact Coach Sergii.)
Tournaments
Where can I find tournament information?
Visit our Tournaments page for a quick overview of upcoming events. For the most up-to-date fencing tournament information, check AskFRED, and USA Fencing for regional and national tournaments. Be sure to monitor registration opening dates, deadlines, and available spots. Walk-ins may be accepted for some local tournaments if space allows, but regional and national tournaments do not allow walk-ins.
How should I prepare for a tournament?
Congratulations on competing at your first tournament! We know this is exciting—and maybe a little intimidating—so we’ve prepared a complete guide to help you get ready (ask Coach Sergii for it). But the short answer is:
Register in advance and let Coach Sergii know that you plan to compete. When signing up for a local tournament on AskFRED, be sure to select Forté Fencing Club (do not add a second club).
Check your equipment ahead of time in case repairs or replacements are needed
Get ready to have fun!
